A Woman’s Courage… From Adversity Comes Steel

Editor's Notebook, May 1, 2005

a common thread among successful individuals...

Welcome to the May edition of Thunder Valley Racing! Those of us fortunate to work here have the privilege of meeting and working with many amazingly talented women. Over the years, I have found a common thread among successful individuals, and the one thing I have learned from all of them is that, “From adversity comes steel.”

Carolyn Ewing is not your everyday automotive enthusiast. Yes, she is passionate about beautiful, fast cars (like all of the women on the Thunder Valley Racing site), and loves the feel of the wind in her hair. But seven years ago, Carolyn’s driving dreams were jeopardized when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Surrounded by her loving family and friends though, Carolyn found the courage to face and conquer her challenge. As she sought to understand the complexities of the diagnosis and learned more of the disease, she focused her energy not only on restoring her own health, but turned her passion for cars into an educational outreach, by forming the Heels and Wheels ladies car cruising association.

recognized Carolyn Ewing as a “Local Hero,”...

At the May car show held in Southern California , the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation recognized Carolyn Ewing as a “Local Hero,” an award reserved only for those individuals truly making difference in the lives of women. Carolyn’s vision for reaching out to women, and her ability to bring people together to support the effort earned her this well-deserved honor.

Thunder Valley Racing was pleased to support the Heels and Wheels club, and sponsored the “See You Later Alligator” award, won by Jack McClure of Riverside , CA , with his beautiful 1963 Chevy BelAire. At these quarterly car shows, the Heels and Wheels club distributes the latest information on breast cancer research, screening and prevention, and has raised more than $5,000 in the fight against this invasive disease.

Thunder Valley Racing salutes you Carolyn,...

Carolyn, and her supportive team are an inspiration to us all. Her courage and passion for life enabled her to focus her energy in places where she could make a difference. While Carolyn’s challenges were monumental, women racers can take a cue from her commitment and dedication, and find within us the courage to dig deep, knowing that “winning” at anything is only earned through perseverance and possessing a “never give up” attitude. Thunder Valley Racing salutes you Carolyn, as well as the ladies (and men) that are associated with the Heels and Wheels organization! You have shown us that together, we can make a difference!

Best of luck to all of our women racers….Work hard, believe in yourself, and follow your heart! I’ll see you at the track!!
