After reading this month's edition of Thunder Valley Racing, make
sure to visit the Racer Profile section of our site where you will
find updated profiles on women racers from virtually every venue
in the racing world today. The first half of the 2005 season has
certainly been a watershed for women in racing, and when I reflect
on the last quarter century, I find that we've truly come a long,
long way.
When I began my racing career (NASCAR dirt track weekly series,
some twenty-five years ago), women racers were not only a rarity,
they were considered downright loathsome to some of our competitors.
Even then though, I found a number of my competitors, and an even
larger number of race fans, very supportive, and even downright
encouraging as I pursued a racing career. Icons such as Janet Guthrie,
Shirley Muldowney, and Lyn St. James had turned the racing world
upside down with their driving skills and savvy on the track, and
local race series were finding an increasing number of women entering
the driving ranks.

Today, there are more than fifteen thousand women registered as
drivers and competitors in local, regional, and national race series.
Women are setting records in speed events at a pace never before
seen, and more women than ever are going for the checkered on tracks
across the country and around the globe. We hope that the inspiring
stories of this month's featured racers are cause for you to find
out more on how you can support and advance women in racing.
