Racing Sisters Honored

HILLIARD, OHIO – Racing sisters Dana and Tracy Conlin were honored November 22 at the Mid State Ohio Kart Club (MSOKC) awards banquet at Gala Events in Grove City, Ohio, for their accomplishments in the 2003 racing season.

Dana Conlin, 21, was recognized as 2003 HPV class champion and received her first place trophy, the HPV champion’s jacket and a set of racing tires. In addition to her MSOKC championship, Dana was recently honored at the Great Lakes Sprint Series awards banquet in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for placing third in the HPV Senior Light class championship. The Great Lakes Sprint Series is a regional karting championship that conducts races in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. 2003 was Dana’s third year of kart racing and her first year in the high-performance HPV class.

Tracy Conlin, 17, received the sixth place trophy for her finish in the MSOKC Briggs Stock Medium championship. In her first year of karting, the sixth place in the highly competitive Briggs class was a respected finish by her peers. Daryl Dillon of Columbus, an 18 year veteran of kart racing said of Tracy’s placement, “People just don’t realize how hard it is to be (in top finishing positions in races) and be consistent all the time to get the points.”

Jim Conlin, Conlin SpeedSports owner commenting on the girls’ accomplishments said, “These young women are very determined to narrow the gender gap in racing – they compete against veteran, cagey guys and young, hungry guys and prove week after week they deserve to be in there fighting with the best of them”. Dana and Tracy are two of only four women competing regularly in the MSOKC series at Circleville Raceway Park in Circleville, Ohio.

Dana and Tracy reside in Hilliard, Ohio, and race for their family’s karting team, Conlin SpeedSports. Dana is an Assistant Teacher at the Goddard School of Dublin and attends Columbus State College part time. Tracy is a Senior at Hilliard Darby High School and works part time at Physicians Health Service in Hilliard. She is preparing to pursue a degree in Zoology after graduation. Both women competed in 2003 with the help of Infonetics, Inc. and McCall Motorsports, both of Grove City and J & J Racing of Erie, Pennsylvania.

Go kart racing or “karting” is widely acknowledged as the first step in a professional racing driver’s career but is also a high-speed family sport for thousands of families across the United States and around the world. Specialized chassis, tires and engines allow racing karts to attain speeds upwards of 80 mph.
