Sondi Eden stretches the points lead ...
Sondi, the Blossom Chevrolet Indianapolis Speedrome points leader, went into the night with a tight points battle among the top 5. She started the feature in 12th and passed her way to 5th, but with bad brakes she decided not to take any unnecessary chances and keep the points lead for the Jonathan Byrd’s Catering/Impact Racing/Auto Meter/Morse Family Dentistry/Bill Gentry Brayton Chevy-powered Hawk midget.
The next venture was with the Dave Stetler Chevrolet/NAPA Auto Parts sprint car at the high bank half-mile paved Mansfield Speedway. Sondi had an average qualifying run of 10th out of 21 and finished 4th in the heat race. She had a bad start in the feature, which dropped her a couple of spots, but she got in line and passed up to 9th.
Back to the Indianapolis Speedrome for the most exciting race of this season, so far. There were fuel system problems early for the points leader, delegating a 6th place finish in the heat race. Sondi started the feature in the fifth row, outside (ranking inversion). On the start, Sondi got pinned in with a car in front of her on the outside and cars coming on the inside;
so she dropped all the way back to 15th. The yellow came out, and that put them in single file for the restart. Sondi knew the car was working well and now it was "show time"! Sondi put on a passing exhibition.
July 2: back in action with the sprint car at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, IA. Sondi did better, qualifying in the 7th position and finishing second in her heat race. They drew an 8 pill for the inversion; so Sondi got to start on the front row outside. She was excited about her chances, but things didn’t go her way. She was running 2nd, and with a slight push two cars got underneath to put her in 4th. The leader was getting his left side off the track and throwing up gravel, and Sondi got caught in it and spun out. Very disappointing for a chance at the top five and for the points
The next night was the sprint car again but this time in Springport, MI. The day started out well but went downhill all night. Sondi qualified 20th out of 26 and finished 7th in the heat race. She started outside third row of the semi-feature. She had a good start, but the car had a push in the middle. She battled to the end but finished 6th.
Sondi will return in the midget to the Indianapolis Speedrome Wednesday 7/7 for a USAC National/Regional race and in the sprint car to New Paris Speedway, IN, on Sat. 7/10.
