Sondi Eden 2004 USAC Champion

Sondi Eden of Crawfordsville, Ind. etched her name into the USAC history books as the sanctioning body's initial female driving champion in its 49-year history. Sondi Eden claimed the 2004 USAC Regional Midget Series Championship as soon as the green flag fell at the Blossom Chevrolet Indianapolis Speedrome Wednesday night and she re-wrote the record books. Sondi Eden took home the crown joining such notables as Mel Kenyon, Tom Bigelow, Rich Vogler, John Andretti, Mack McClellan and Ted Hines.

Travis Young won his career first USAC feature but all eyes were on Eden and her march to history. Young came into the season's finale needing a win to have a shot at Eden's crown but the young lady from Crawfordsville was not to be denied. Amazingly, their fathers, Ron Eden and Norm Young, are both veterans of the series and both youngsters came through the Kenyon Midget series.

Butler, who won a heat race, led for the first 14 laps before yielding to Young. Behind them, Eden tried desperately to cap off her championship campaign with her second victory of the season. Eden, driving the No. 15 Jonathan Byrd’s Catering/Impact Racing/Auto Meter/Morse Family Dentistry/Bill Gentry/Scott Bailey Chevy-powered Hawk midget, made the moves early. inant car and didn’t win the race but we did win the championship and I guess that accounts for a lot. The fastest car doesn’t always win but we put on a great show and proved that we are champions” Eden said. Although she was disappointed with sixth place she was ecstatic after picking up the championship, 41 points ahead of Young. “This feels great,” Eden said after the race. “I’ve been nervous for a little while, wanting to get the points deal over with, and just be able to race. This just feels great to have a USAC title.”

Sondi will race the sprint car at Anderson Speedway, IN on Sat. 8/21.
