Sondi Eden Wins First Preliminary Sprint Car Race of the Year

Crawfordsville, Ind. - USAC Midget racing champion Sondi Eden was excited to get started in the Racer’s Edge Graphics, Gould Body & Paint, Dave Stetler Chevrolet-Cadillac, NAPA Auto Parts 410 wing sprint car.

Opening night at Mansfield, Ohio was rescheduled due to weather. So, the first race was Sat. night, May 21 at Kalamazoo, Michigan. The team had some equipment failure that caused Sondi to have a day full of ups and downs. The first was no brakes on the car. The crew continued working on the car and got it better for the heat race. Sondi looked strong in the heat race as she drove to win the first preliminary race of the season! Sondi started 14th in the feature and now that the car was working she was ready for the challenge to race to the front. She had a good start as she passed her way up to 10th and Sondi was on the move. As she was passing for 9th, the fuel pump worked loose which caused the engine to quit so she had to pull it in. “Racing is a roller coaster of emotions and we started the season off riding it up and down – beginning glitches with the car that should not have happened, then win a preliminary race, then be working your way to the front and the fuel pump work loose and we have a DNF the first race! It was a good and bad day all in one.” Eden said of her day at the track.

FINISHES 8th AT THE HISTORICAL WINCHESTER SPEEDWAY

½ mile, high banks of Winchester Speedway reopened this season and Sondi was thrilled to be back. “This place is so exciting – because of our race in Michigan last night, we only got three hours of sleep but this place will wake you up! There is so much history here and the high banks are so fast and fun – when your car is hooked up.” Sondi said of Winchester.

Sondi quickly got reacquainted with the track and knew there were a lot of changes that needed to be done on the car. Their speeds were in the middle of the field but she knew they could be a lot faster. So the crew went to work and made changes and also decided to use a harder compound tire. There was only qualifying to decide the feature line-up. The harder tire didn’t heat up for qualifying but Sondi managed to qualify 10th. The feature started and Sondi was running 9th. With each lap the right rear would get better and better and the car was getting faster. Sondi was on the move as she passed her way up to 5th but then the yellow flag came out. Sondi had a straight away lead on 6th place but this bunched them back together. Under several yellow flag laps the right rear cooled off and on the restart it wasn’t working anymore. Sondi tried to battle it but she dropped back to an 8th place finish. “The car owner told me that we were going to roll the dice and try the harder tire. It was coming in on the long run but that yellow killed us. We weren’t a winning car today but I got the most out of the car and you can’t control the yellows” Sondi said of her race at Winchester.
