Injury Curtailed 2003 Season/ Spinal Surgery Scheduled For 10/9/03
Dana
Moore, who won 3rd place in points in the Legends Series competition
in 2002 at Cajon Speedway, set the second fast lap ever in a Legends
at Cajon Speedway only a 100th of a fraction away from the track
record of several years ago and qualified 1st three consecutive
weeks is scheduled for spinal surgery on September 26th.
Dana,
of Crest, was seriously injured in a road race at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway in January of 2003 when a rookie driver stopped short in
front of her as she raced around a corner. Her car went airborne
as she tried to avoid a full impact on the other driver and drove
up over his left fender. Not realizing she had a fracture, Moore
refused medical treatment and raced the next day in another race
starting in 24th and finishing 6th. By the time she took the checkered
flag, Moore said, "I thought the race would never be over.
I was in so much pain! Believe me, that was the longest race of
my life." In spite of not being able to compete in the remaining
races, she won a 4th place PRO trophy in the Legends Hitchin Post
Las Vegas Road Racing Championship runoff. Kyle Busch who has gone
on to join a NASCAR team won first place PRO in the same 2003 competition.
Dana was running second in PRO when she fractured her neck. Moore
also won 6th place PRO in the Southern California Legends Association
although she didn't run a full schedule at Irwindale Speedway.
Moore's
medical records were sent to Dr. Tramell, the well known Indy 500
orthopedic surgeon who informed her of the fracture. She sought
a third opinion from an orthopedic surgeon in Northern California
who concurred with the Indy doctor. Her surgery will be done by
Dr. Lee at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego.
Unfortunately,
Dana had to say no to two offers to run in the 2003 World Challenge
Series (one in a Porsche and one in a BMW) where she would have
had the opportunity to compete against the likes of Boris Said,
another well known San Diego County driver.
Although
she has had to sit out the 2003 season, Dana plans to campaign a
Late Model at Cajon Speedway in 2004. She says she can't wait to
get back in the car. "I'm going to be racing something somewhere,"
says Moore. Dana has won numerous driver awards and set track records
throughout the United States on both oval and road racing courses
competing in the American LeMans WGGT series, driving a Mark IV
vintage road racing car and in her Legends competition in Southern
California.
