Owens Turns Adversity into a Solid Run
Sixteen year old FASCAR Late Model driver Alli Owens has
suffered through a couple of tough weeks being in a crash
which left her primary car needing major clip repairs. However,
Owens rebounded in her back up car to grab a third place a
couple of weeks ago at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida.
After starting third in the feature event she was shuffled
out of line and nearly to the back of the pack. She than began
an assault to move back to the front of the field.
Using a clean aggressive style she's known for, she made
her way back up to the third spot and was gaining on the front
two when the laps ran out. "After a rough crash its good
to get a solid finish. We worked really hard to get ready
again and we are still trying to get the primary car back
together. Hopefully this will turn our luck around a bit"
stated Owens.
Owens now finds herself 4th in the Late Model division points
standings, and leading the rookie of the year points.
Recently, Alli Owens grabbed another solid finish in her
back up car and moved up in the season points battle at New
Smyrna Speedway.
Owens would start third in the FASCAR sanctioned Late Model
feature. On the start she was hooked up in a three way battle
for the spot. An early caution would foil the effort as scoring
would have her fifth for the restart.
She would battle hard to get around the fourth place car,
that was holding her up, as the lead pack got away a bit.
After finally clearing the spot she began the chase for the
third spot , but the lead pack had a near straight away lead.
Owens would chase down the third place car with just two
laps remaining and try several moves finally getting a run
on the last lap and last corners to come to the line side
by side for the spot. She ending up getting nosed for the
spot by inches.
"We really had a good car tonight, the track was slick
from the rain earlier, but we found a groove to make it work.
I feel good about a couple of good weeks and we are off until
the 16th and we will have the primary car back ready to go.
The crew tells me it should be a bullet, I am excited about
that" stated Owens.
Owens has veteran driver and multiple championship winner,
Bobby Sears coaching her in the pits and said she has learned
a lot from him.
Owens now has moved into the third spot in the points and
is just 5 points out of 1st place in the season long chase
for the track championship. She holds a 91 point lead in the
rookie of the year standings.
"It felt great to chase down the third place car and
have a battle to the stripe like that, that was pretty intense.
I can't wait to get back in the primary car and challenge
those guys for a win" added Owens.
After school and during the summer months, Alli works for
FinishLine Racing School in Edgewater, Florida, a school she
had attended last year and was one of the top students in
her class.
Alli is also working with Tish Sheets with the diversity
program for NASCAR and they have major goals for later in
2005 and into 2006.
With school, work and racing, it's easy to see how busy this
young lady is. However she's never too busy to stop and talk
to a fan or volunteer her time with Race Against Drugs talking
to kids about the dangers of alcohol, drugs and tobacco.
