Rookie Jamie "Subie Gal" Thomas finishes 2nd in SCCA National Championship

Kirkland, WA- Thanks to the hard work of the crew, sponsors and fan supporters, driver Jamie Thomas and team Subie Gal Racing acquired enough points to finish 2nd overall in the SCCA Pro Rally National Championship for the Production car class. The team went into the final round of the season, the Lake Superior Pro Rally, one point out of 2nd place chasing fellow competitor Jeff Field. All the team needed to do was FINISH the event as Jeff had crashed his car in a previous event and would not be in attendance. Jamie wrangled the 1.8L front wheel drive Impreza to the finish, 4th in car class – all this through mud, sleet, snow, waterholes, definitely the most challenging rally yet.

“I am floored by this! As of midnight on Friday night, I thought we were ‘gonners’ for sure but the car hung in there.” stated Jamie, “We did it! All of this hard work, time, money, effort - it’s paid off. I cannot thank my crew – Mike Leonard and Dave Clark enough for keeping the car sound as can be. I swear that car is bullet proof! And I also need to thank my co-drivers Tina, John and especially Dave Weiman – they kept me on the road, focused and were all a huge part of this success. I’m more grateful than anyone could know.”

Once again veteran co-driver and current 2002 season SCCA Pro Rally Production class co driver champion, Dave Weiman joined Jamie as her navigator. Dave had sealed up his co driving National Championship at the previous event, the Wild West International Rally, but he wanted to come back and help guide Jamie to the finish.

As stated in a prior release, in regional rally news, Jamie and Subie Gal Racing have won the Northwest Region Class 3 Championship for the 2002 year. This is the regional “driver class” designed for novices and those still getting used to the sport. Needless to say, Jamie will be a seed 2 driver in the region next year. Also, it’s nearly decided that in the Northern Pacific Division, Jamie will be runner up in the championship for the Production Car Class. The race was very close with Mark Tabor, but Jamie had to skip the last club event of the year in order to attend the LSPR rally and gain the points needed for the National Championship, thus giving up some key car class points.

“I’m a little disappointed, but I made the right decision in giving up some regional points.,” Jamie commented, “The National series 2nd place finish means so much to me. And I have to keep reminding myself, it is my rookie year – and I did over a dozen rallies with no DNF’s, one championship, and 2 times a runner up? I’m very proud of my crew, sponsors and my little put-put 1.8L. And I’ll be back next season for more!”
