Jamie "Subie Gal" Thomas Extends Lead In Western States Rally Championship
Olympia/Shelton, WA – The Subie Gal Racing team and team car "Burnsie
the Rally Wagon" took on Round 2 of the Western States Rally
Championship in a typical wet, rainy contesting of the Dryad Quest and
Shitepoke SCCA ClubRallies. The team was still licking their wounds
from damage received at the Rim of the World ProRally -- but with the car
mostly intact managed to win the PGT class in fine style on both days
and also placed an impressive 3rd OVERALL in the Shitepoke Clubrally!
This gives the team another 100 points to add to their WSRC lead!
As is the norm in the Northwest, Dryad/Shitepoke Clubrallies were there
to challenge the entrants with rain, mud, and "gotchas" everywhere. Most
teams slipped and slid their way around the nearly 140 miles of special
stage terrain. The entrants were greeted with anything from light rain
to all-out downpours -- this put most teams on the edge and kept them at
the top of their game.
“The car felt great this weekend, even considering the conditions,”
Subie Gal Racing team driver Jamie Thomas stated. “We have spent the
past 2.5 weeks repairing all of the damage sustained at the Rim
Rally; so this outing was very rewarding. It felt great to have a
nice, solid drive with no serious issues or offs to contend with!
Yeah ... it rocked!“
Starting 5th on the road on day one, the team encountered the only big
moment of the weekend. Paul Eklund was first car on the road and had an
uncharacteristic excursion at an approximately 4th-gear 70-m.p.h. "easy left"
(unmarked in our route books) into a nice medium right. Well, Jamie and
the team followed his footsteps into the same ditch, collecting nothing
less than a small stadium full of grass and weeds into the wheels, wheel
wells. Finding themselves off the road and in a bit of trouble, the team
followed Eklund's ruts through the grassy ditch and back onto the road --
ignoring Eklund's ruts which continued across the road and off into
the ditch on the opposite side! Small moment, nerves shaken, but no
harm done.
"Third overall ... we were flying," commented team navigator Matt
Gauger. "We just drove our race, and it turned out really well!"
The success of this weekend adds to the team lead in both the Northern
Pacific and Western States Rally Championships. The team now has a
significant lead in both championships and can only hope to add to that
tally in upcoming events.
