Jamie "Subie Gal" Thomas Tackles Treeline Clubrally - 1st in Class

Monrovia, CA - The Subie Gal Racing team headed south -- back down into California for the second time in 2004 -- this time to contest the one-day Treeline Clubrally held just outside of Monrovia, CA, in the beautiful Angeles Mountains. Treeline rally is Round 3 in the Western States Rally Championship. Team SGRacing currently has a points lead in the PGT class in this championship; thus the team decided to make a run at keeping that lead for the remainder of the season, justifying the long haul to California for this challenging one-day rally. The team did well for Treeline rookies, managing 4th Overall and 1st in their class, thus adding 100 needed points to their Championship Leading points total -- well worth the trip to find success!

This event is unlike any other in the country. Yes, it is a one-day event; yes, there are a low number of stages; but what stages they are!! This is not a horsepower contest of a rally; this rally is TIGHT and TWISTY, with most cars NEVER getting out of 2nd gear. This rally challenges the driver, the car, the gearboxes, and the navigator's ability to "hold his lunch." Many a seasoned navvie will lose his or her cookies at this event; it's just that insanely twisty. Burnsie the Rally Wagon and the team met this challenge but not without consequences.

"The car really struggled on this one -- gearing was just all wrong,” Subie Gal Racing team driver Jamie Thomas explained. “The stages were as twisty and technical as I had been told -- they were so tight that this became an issue. First gear was too much, too over-revved; second gear, the car was bogging and underpowered. There was NO happy medium, and the WRX really struggled through the stages. We made it but only just ... car was overheating, even blew a coolant hose at one point! Crazy rally ... I like it! Nothing like a challenge.“

"We did really well for our first time at an event like this," commented team navigator Matt Gauger, "It was a good rally for us, nice to try something new and different."

Jamie and Matt currently have the lead Northern Pacific, NorthWest Region, and Western States Rally Championships. The team is also in contention for a podium finish in the SCCA ProRally National Championships.
