Debbie  Brannan

Type of Racing: Stock Car

Race Series: NASCAR Weekly Racing Series

Introduction: Debbie has been a racing fan since age 3, but being a single Mom restricted her involvement for many years. At one time, Debbie managed a restaurant on the route to Hickory Speedway in North Carolina. There she met many racing greats including Dale Earnhart, who became something of a hero to her. When she remarried, husband Gene White loved racing too, and they began to take in the action at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. Some time later, her son Chris Black started driving at the track. Now Debbie was really hooked. For her birthday, her husband gave her a "ride along" at Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte, and after three laps, Debbie just knew that she had to race.

From that moment on, Gene supported Debbie's dream. They bought a car for $200 and he acted as crew chief, mechanic and icon of inspiration as Debbie learned to turn a wrench and use a grinder. Next came bondo, sanding and painting the car. Whether Debbie is working on the car or racing, Gene is her greatest confidence builder and source of support.

As a single mother, Debbie never had time or money for racing schools, and her initial practice time involved taking her son's car on and off the trailer and driving it around the yard. On Mothers' Day she raced for the first time and placed better than her son; since then she hasn't missed a race.

Current Season: For 2002 Debbie's 1983 Monte Carlo has a new purple paint job that stands out at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. She is in 10th place in the standings and plans on a top ten finish to the season.

Racing Goals: To get to Victory Lane, to move to a higher class and to race as long as she can get into a car, hopefully well into her nineties.

Personal: Debbie is married to Gene White and has one son, one daughter and two grandchildren. The forty-four year old cosmetologist's busy life prevents her from getting as much practice time as she would like, but the racing lifestyle provides lots of together time for her entire family. Debbie and son Chris Black share a friendly rivalry as they race in the same class, and when it comes to working on the cars, everyone pitches in.

Special Thanks to: Debbie treasures the support of husband Gene and son Chris, her daughter Michelle Callahan and daughter-in-law Kelly Black, and her grandchildren Taylor and Dale. She is grateful to mentors David Roberts (SC Late Model Division) and Michael Bruton (Street Stock Division) for their advice. And her thanks go to Unique Hair Designs and Day Spa (Simpsonville SC), Debbie's employer and sponsor, and to JB's Home Repair for their sponsorship.
