Julie Bergman

Type of Racing: Sports Car

Race Series: Camaro-Mustang Challenge

Introduction: Julie has loved sports cars from birth, however, she also has a passion for off-road vehicles. She got involved with a Jeep club, the Rough and Ready Jeep Club, based in Sacramento, CA in her 30s. During those years Julie became an accomplished off-road driver conquering challenging trails in California such as the Rubicon.

Julie is also a bona-fide Firebird/Camaro nut, and began driving and modifying these cars in the 80s. Eventually she took her '97 Trans-Am to seven SCCA High Performance Street Schools at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Northern California where Julie learned the basic skills of road racing. Her instructors encouraged her to get a race car and she decided to get a 1984 Camaro Z28! Julie then earned her racing license with the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). At the age of 38, Julie was racing in the NASA Camaro-Mustang Challenge in the Gecko Racing sponsored 1984 Trans-Am. She now is an instructor at the SCCA High Performance Street School and loves to show everyone how to have fun at her favorite track, Thunderhill!

Current Season: Julie is getting faster every race, and continues to improve her qualifying and finishing position as the season progresses. Scheduled events this year include Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Southern California, Thunderhill Raceway Park in Northern California and Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California.

Racing Goals: Julie got into racing to continue to learn the art of driving. She has become a student of theory as well as application, taking instruction and reading books on the subject of racing in her spare time. Her ultimate goal is to become the best racer she can, maximizing her abilities and performance.

Personal: Julie is 40 years old, married and lives in Davis, California. She runs an Internet-based business called Gecko Ranch (http://www.geckoranch.com). She breeds geckos (lizards) for her customers to have as pets. Julie offers a unique opportunity for people to have long and enjoyable experiences as gecko owners due to her extensive knowledge of gecko keeping. Julie's most popular pet gecko, the Leopard Gecko, may live up to 30 years in captivity. Julie is a frequent lecturer at herpetological (study of reptiles and amphibians) societies on her topic of expertise, geckos.

Julie earned a BS degree in Biological Psychology from the University of California at Davis and has completed her coursework for a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology at California State University, Sacramento.

Special Thanks to: Thanks to my husband for putting up with my racing bug, to my mentor "Fast" Eddie Marshall, and to my racing colleagues in the Camaro-Mustang Challenge for the support and tutoring sessions!
