Ingrid Irby

Type of Racing: Open Wheel

Race Series: South Atlantic Road Racing Championships (SARRC), sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).

Introduction: When she was 30, Ingrid Irby discovered a deep passion for racing. She demonstrated her eye-catching abilities in karting, drag racing, and autocrossing with truly extraordinary fearlessness and remarkable times. Even professional racer and instructor Justin Bell has commented with a smile: "she's just a little too quick, isn't she?"

Her love for the fastest and most challenging vehicles led Ingrid to seek out excellent open wheel instruction almost immediately, and she found it in the Bertil Roos Racing School. For an opportunity to learn from superb racers at a very difficult road course, she chose a 5-day program at Virginia International Raceway. Ingrid naturally bonded with the well-balanced and lightweight Formula Ford 2000 cars from her very first day, driving near their limit on this spectacular track. In late July 2004, she was granted a racing license by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). Ingrid is now active in the South Atlantic Road Racing Championship (SARRC).

Current Season: Currently, Ingrid is active in the South Atlantic Road Racing Championships (SARRC). In the SARRC alone, she has been fortunate enough to race sports cars (like the #91 Perfect Pass Racing Nissan SE-R) and open wheel cars (like the #2 Kohler Formula 500 and #4 Coast Guard F500). Her racing has taken her to some world renowned tracks, including Road Atlanta, Virginia International Raceway, and Barber Motorsports Park. Most recently, she experienced the fast turns of Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah, GA.

She will receive her SCCA National license in June, and therefore is on track to receive a pro license in 2007.

Racing Goals: One day, like most open wheel drivers, Ingrid hopes to win the Champ Car World Series. In the meantime, she is aiming for levels like the new F2000 Pro Championships or the Cooper Tires series.

Another of Ingrid's goals is to grow the talent pool for American open wheel racing. Ingrid considers it very important for every female racer to encourage at least one more woman to get into entry level racing.

Personal: Ingrid was born in Minnesota but makes her home in Atlanta, with her husband. Although she's almost always thinking about racing (indoor karting when she can't get to the outdoor tracks), she also enjoys playing basketball, swimming, and watching movies.

Special Thanks to: Ingrid wants to thank Thunder Valley Racing for their groundbreaking efforts to promote women in racing. She also is grateful to Bertil Roos Racing School for providing a challenging and enriching way to learn quickly at a high level.
